Description of Project:

This research project aims to enhance language access within the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and Community Services Boards (CSBs) for Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals across Virginia. Employing a multifaceted approach, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and data analysis, the project will evaluate current language access policies, their implementation, and the qualifications of language access service providers. It will also identify common barriers, assess resource availability, and explore experiences and best practices in language access. The insights gained will guide strategic planning to optimize language services, ensuring a more inclusive and effective behavioral health system. 

Project Goals:

The needs assessment will:

  • Increase DBHDS and CSB employees’ understanding of language access policies and standards.
  • Explain how language access policies are being implemented at the local and state levels.
  • Identify training and qualifications of language access service providers who are assisting behavioral health care teams.
  • Illustrate common language access barriers in providing behavioral health services to LEP individuals at the local and state level.
  • Document existing language access resources in the different geographic areas and facilitates, including resource utilization and gaps.
  • Capture experiences, challenges, and best practices for providers, staff, and clients when using language access services.
